Most indoor cats spend a big part of the day alone. They'll sleep through a lot of it, but the waking hours are when boredom shows up: the shredded couch, the toppled plant, the 5 a.m. wake-up call. The right solo toys give that energy somewhere to go.
First, what's safe to leave out
Only leave out toys that don't have strings, elastic or small parts that can be pulled off. Wand toys, string toys and anything with loose feathers should be put away after supervised play, because cats can swallow them. Check toys every week and throw away anything damaged.
1. Ball tracks
Ball tracks are the classic home-alone toy: the ball can't escape under the fridge, so the game keeps going. The 4-Level Ball Track Tower has four tiers of balls, which makes it easy to share between two cats. The Catstages Twist-A-Ball Track is a compact single track, and the Bergan Turbo Scratcher adds a scratch pad in the middle. For cats who love to watch the world, the Window Suction Track Ball Toy sticks to a window.
2. Puzzle toys
Puzzle toys make your cat work for treats or kibble, which keeps their brain busy and slows down fast eaters. Try the Cat Puzzle Toy with Sisal Scratching Post, which combines a treat puzzle and a scratching post. Start easy so your cat wins early, then make it harder.
3. Motion toys
Battery-powered toys that move on their own can trigger the chase instinct when nobody's home to wave a wand. The Motion-Sensor Rolling Ball wakes up when your cat touches it, and the Smart Sensing Electronic Snake wriggles across the floor. Choose toys with an automatic shut-off so they don't run all day, and try them while you're home first to see how your cat reacts.
4. Kickers
A kicker toy is something to grab, hug and bunny-kick, which is how cats "finish" prey. Plush kickers like the KONG Crackles Fish are safe to leave out as long as they're in one piece.
5. Rotate, don't pile up
A basket of 20 toys gets ignored. Leave out two or three, put the rest away and swap them every week. A toy your cat hasn't seen for a while feels new again.
Play before you leave
Solo toys work best when your cat isn't already wound up. A 5 to 10 minute wand session before you leave for work, and another when you get home, takes the edge off. Our guide on how to play with a cat wand toy shows how.
